Compost can be stored for the next season, but it must be used entirely during that season. If you decide to store excess compost, remember to balance the moisture content in the compost. If there is too much moisture, you run the risk of your compost becoming moldy over time, but it should not dry out completely either. Therefore, we recommend that you create a storage environment where it remains moist and nutrient-rich for the next season.
3 Storage options:
1) Cover the compost with a tarpaulin / plastic sheet
This is one of the easiest methods for storing extra compost, but you do need some space in the garden for it. By storing your compost outside on the ground, you prevent excess moisture from accumulating. This method automatically provides your compost with sufficient moisture, which in turn benefits the quality of your compost. Storing the compost directly on the ground also allows worms to enter the compost heap, where they leave behind their rich castings. The only downside to this method is that it requires quite a bit of space and can look unsightly.
2) Plastic carrier bags
Do you have an abundance of plastic bags? Then you have finally found a useful purpose for them! You can also store the compost in plastic carrier bags. Choosing this option? Then store them outside (under cover) in a cool place and check the moisture level at least once a week to ensure the compost does not get too wet or too dry.
3) Trash cans
As a final alternative, you can also store the compost in a trash can. To maintain quality, we recommend checking the moisture content in the bin at least once a week and stirring the compost well (bringing the bottom layer to the top). Is the compost getting too dry? Then spray it lightly with water and stir it well again.
