How does the HOTBIN work?
The HOTBIN is an innovative compost bin that converts various types of waste into compost quickly using hot composting. With a capacity of 100 to 700 litres, the HOTBIN uses a smart system to retain heat and promote the activity of microorganisms. The enclosed bin reaches temperatures of 40-60°C, which results in the accelerated decomposition of organic matter. As a result, you can process kitchen and garden waste up to 32x faster than with cold compost bins, have compost within 90 days, and minimise unpleasant odours and pests. The HOTBIN processes many types of material, such as kitchen waste, garden waste, cardboard, paper, food scraps, and pet bedding, and converts it into nutrient-rich compost!
For the full explanation, see the manual.
What are the differences between cold and hot composting?
Hot composting and cold composting differ in the speed of composting. Hot composting, as with the HOTBIN, creates a heat of approximately 60°C, accelerates the decomposition of organic material by up to 32 times faster, and produces high-quality compost within 90 days. This is a process that can only take place with sufficient oxygen. As a result, it is important to keep the contents of the HOTBIN aerated using wood chips. On the other hand, cold composting is a slower process without strict temperature requirements. It takes about 1-3 years for the organic material to be converted into compost. Therefore, to be able to process all your kitchen and garden waste, you need a much larger compost bin. The advantage, however, is that it requires much less attention than the hot composting process.
Which waste can I compost in the HOTBIN?
Most organic materials are easy to compost with the HOTBIN. Consider, for example:
- Kitchen waste: Fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, and eggshells
- Garden waste: Grass clippings, leaves, weeds, small twigs, and flower trimmings
- Prunings: Twigs and small branches
- Paper: Cardboard, newspapers, office paper, magazines, and paper packaging
- Cooked food: Leftovers
- Straw and sawdust: For example, pet bedding
For the extensive list, see: 170 materials you can compost in the HOTBIN.
What can I do with the compost from the HOTBIN?
Compost is a valuable soil conditioner and source of nutrients for plants. Mix it with garden soil to improve soil structure, increase water retention, and provide nourishment to the earth. Compost promotes the activity of microorganisms and suppresses diseases, leading to healthier plants. It also reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides, making gardening more environmentally friendly. Furthermore, compost helps reduce waste and contributes to a more sustainable lifestyle. Whether used in vegetable gardens, flower beds, or planters, compost is a versatile and sustainable resource for gardening enjoyment.
How does hot composting work?
With hot composting, higher temperatures, usually between 40°C and 60°C, stimulate the activity of microorganisms such as bacteria and actinomycetes. These microorganisms accelerate the decomposition of organic material through enzymatic processes. They consume green material, which is rich in nitrogen, and brown material, which contains carbon. The heat released during their metabolic activity speeds up the composting process, thereby killing pathogens and unwanted weed seeds. This interaction between microorganisms and heat ensures a more efficient and faster composting process in a hot compost bin such as the HOTBIN.
All HOTBIN questions
Must the lid be closed at all times?
Yes, unless you are adding waste, keep the lid of the HOTBIN closed at all times to retain the heat.
How does oxygen/air get into the HOTBIN?
The air inlet is located at the bottom front (See the diagram in the manual). Ensure that the inlet is clear, both from the outside (do not place anything in front of it) and from the inside (drain leachate regularly).
Where can I get more wood chips?
Make it yourself by cutting branches/twigs or use your own chipper/shredder. Check if your municipality or a landscaper offers this for free.
How do I convert compost (or food waste) volume (liters) to weight (kg)?
Food waste has a density of approximately 50%, so a full 10-liter kitchen bin would weigh about 5 kg. Compost also has a density of approximately 50%.
What can I do if the hot composting process has stopped?
If the process has stopped, let's say the temperature was above 50°C and has dropped back to about 20°C or ambient temperature, add a container (approx. 3-5 kg) of new food waste, stir it into the top layer, and leave it for 24 hours. The internal temperature should start to rise. In addition, in winter you could also use the included refillable water bottle (see manual for more info). Fill it with warm water and place it in the middle of the HOTBIN.
Should my compost smell like soil?
Yes, compost smells like soil/forest floor.
Do I need more than one HOTBIN?
There are different HOTBIN variants, suitable for different households. This depends on the amount of kitchen waste and the size of the garden. There is a comparison tool on the homepage. Please note that when comparing with traditional 'cold' bins, your waste decomposes 32 times faster when operating at 60°C. Only if you have an exceptionally large household, a very large garden or lawn, would we recommend the HOTBIN Mega (450/700). You can also choose multiple HOTBINs (200), if you prefer this system.
Is the HOTBIN rat-resistant?
Pest control experts indicate that rats have eaten almost everything, including all types of plastic, metal wires, and concrete. It is impossible to say that the HOTBIN is '100% rat-proof'. The HOTBIN is designed to minimize its attractiveness to rats.
Should I alternate greens and browns in the HOTBIN?
Green materials (nitrogen-rich) and brown materials (carbon-rich) must be alternated well in traditional composting. With the HOTBIN, you do indeed need to mix green and brown. However, you do not need to create layers (lasagna technique). It is primarily important that you chop/cut the waste into small pieces (preferably <2 cm, but always <4 cm) and add both shredded paper/cardboard and some wood chips.
Composting weed (seeds) in the HOTBIN?
Weed seeds can survive in a cold heap, but most are killed in a hot HOTBIN. Even persistent species such as greater celandine, knotweed, bulbous buttercup, ground elder and bindweed will not survive temperatures of 40-60°C.
Steam is coming out of the air vent, is that normal?
Steam is a good indicator that the temperature is rising and the process is working. Occasionally, when the air temperature drops, the steam leaving the compost (via the air vent) will condense before it leaves the HOTBIN. You may see small droplets on the lid and the side walls. This is normal!
What if my compost looks very woody?
It is very easy to add too few wood chips, so make sure you add a few handfuls each time you add fresh waste. This is essential to keep the compost airy and oxygenated. If you have a batch of compost that looks too woody, remove it, store it, and reuse it as wood chips.
What should I not add to my HOTBIN?
A concise list of things that should NOT be added to the HOTBIN:
- Liquids such as water, urine, soups, gravy. This is too wet.
- Hot BBQ/coal/wood ash (allow to cool first).
- Glass, plastic, rubber, paint, metals, solvents, gasoline, oil
- Large frozen items (allow to thaw and cut into pieces)
- Contents of your vacuum cleaner

What is the HOTBIN made of?
The HOTBIN is made of expanded polypropylene (EPP) - a robust engineering material from the brand ARPRO. See the website of ARPRO for more information.
Is the HOTBIN only available in black?
Yes. Why black - That is the standard color of EPP material. Hundreds of colors are possible, but coloring the bead adds significant costs.
How long does the HOTBIN last?
The EPP ARPRO material is a durable material that is weather-resistant to rain and sun. The HOTBIN can therefore be left outside without any issues. If maintained properly, it should provide you with fresh compost for at least 10 years.
Does the HOTBIN come with a warranty?
Yes, the HOTBIN comes with a 3-year warranty on the manufacture of the HOTBIN itself. The accessories supplied with the HOTBIN have a 1-year warranty.
Does the HOTBIN need to be assembled?
The HOTBIN (200) and HOTBIN Mini (100) are delivered ready to use.
We recommend assembling the HOTBIN Mega (450/700) with 2 people.
Is 80°C too hot?
The maximum temperature at which bacteria can work is 70-75°C. It is rare for the HOTBIN to exceed 60°C. Double-check that you are reading the Celsius scale and not Fahrenheit (60°C = 140°F).
Should I wrap food waste in newspaper?
No, you should not wrap food waste in newspaper when adding it to the HOTBIN.
With cold composting, this is sometimes recommended to prevent flies from getting to the food waste. Above 40°C, the heat in the HOTBIN kills flies. The closed lid prevents flies from entering, and even if they do get in (for example, when the lid is open), as soon as the HOTBIN reaches over 40°C, they are killed. In the HOTBIN, wrapping food waste has a negative effect - the paper becomes damp and creates a barrier to oxygen. The material inside will rot instead of composting aerobically and hot.
Can I add worms to the HOTBIN?
It is not necessary to add worms to the HOTBIN, but they can accelerate composting.
If you do wish to add them: do not add them to the top active layer (60°C will kill them). Instead, add them to the cooler bottom layer of material via the HOTBIN's harvest hatch.
What effect does a cold wind have on my compost?
Due to its excellent insulation, the HOTBIN is unaffected by cold winds. This is in contrast to a compost heap, which loses its heat about 100 times faster in a cold wind compared to a warm, still day.
What is mulch compost?
Mulch compost is compost that is not fully mature or stable, which the HOTBIN can produce within 30 days. If you look closely, you will see many twigs and recognizable pieces of plants. It is still decomposing and is not yet ready to be used as a soil conditioner or fertilizer - it will deprive the soil of oxygen and potentially nitrogen. This is fine if you want to mulch, but not if you want to improve or fertilize your soil.
