How do I build a compost bin?

Making a compost bin can be a simple and satisfying task for any gardening enthusiast. A compost bin can be made from various materials, including wood, wire mesh, rain barrels, pallets, or even plastic containers. If you are going to start making your own compost bin, there are a number of steps you can follow. In this example, we will explain how to make a compost bin out of wire mesh or wood:

1. Use the right materials

  • Use a piece of rope to determine the right dimensions. You can place the rope on the ground to then mark the size of your compost bin on the ground.
  • Use an earth auger to drill holes of equal depth into the ground.
  • Four or more wooden posts that will form the edges of the compost bin.
  • Coarse wire mesh or wooden planks for the exterior of the compost bin. (Wire mesh is affordable and therefore perfect for making a cheap compost bin).
  • Wire cutters or a saw to cut the mesh or wooden planks to size.
  • Screws or nails to attach the mesh or wooden planks to the wooden posts.
  • A hammer or drill to fasten everything.

2. Determine the right location and dimensions

Now that you have collected the materials, it is time to determine where it will go and how big your bin is going to be. Preferably choose a bare and level surface, ideally without paving. Place the compost bin in a sheltered location, ideally under a tree. In this way, the compost heap is optimally protected against sun and rain. Place a rope on the ground to determine the size. We recommend making a bin of approximately 1 square meter (1x1 meter). Make sure the spot is easily accessible, but also away from direct sunlight and strong wind. It is crucial that the waste remains are packed compactly together so that the composting process is stimulated. This is difficult with a compost bin that is too large.

3. Place the wooden posts in the ground

Using the earth auger, drill four holes in the ground at the corners of the compost bin. Place the wooden posts into the holes and fill the holes back up with the soil, so that they stand firmly.

4. Dig a trench

Dig a straight trench between the wooden posts about 15 centimeters deep. In this, you will later bury the edge of the wire mesh or the bottom wooden plank. In this way, your compost bin is also nicely sealed at the bottom.

5. Cut or saw the material to size

For the wire mesh, use dimensions of 1 meter wide and 1.15 meters high. You will bury the bottom 15 centimeters in the trench. Saw wooden planks to a width of 1 meter. You attach the planks on top of each other until you have reached the desired height. It is useful to make one side less high. This makes it easier to use the compost bin.

6. Attach the wire mesh or wooden planks to the wooden posts

Finally, attach the wire mesh with nails or staples. You can attach wooden planks to the wooden posts using nails or screws. If you use wooden planks, make sure to leave space between the planks. This allows sufficient oxygen to reach the compost and gives any wood that might shift some room to move. Bury the bottom edge of the wire mesh or the wooden planks in the trench you dug. For extra sturdiness, you can mount a few additional planks to the top edge of the compost bin.

Building a compost bin requires some dexterity and attention to detail. Ensure that your bin is sturdily constructed and well-sealed to prevent pests from getting in or waste from sliding out of the bin. Also, consider adding a lid to cover the compost bin and regulate the temperature and moisture. By taking these extra steps, you can ensure that your compost bin performs optimally and that you can quickly produce high-quality compost for your garden.

Depending on your preferences and available resources, you can design a compost bin that fits the style and size of your garden. However, it is important to remember that the quality and effectiveness of homemade compost bins often cannot compare to those of professional composting systems like the HOTBIN. Homemade bins lose heat more quickly, while the HOTBIN features a 5mm thermal layer, which effectively retains heat and speeds up the composting process.

Making your own compost bin?

For those who are handy and like adding a personal touch to their garden projects, it can be advantageous to make your own compost bin. Materials such as wooden pallets, rain barrels, or even plastic bins can be converted into a functional compost bin. Although making a compost bin yourself can be creative and satisfying, finding high-quality materials and carefully building the bin can be a challenge.

A homemade compost bin does offer some advantages. You can determine the design and dimensions yourself, allowing you to adapt the compost bin to your specific needs. Moreover, the process of making a compost bin yourself can be an educational experience, where you also learn more about composting and sustainable gardening.

Do you want to make a small compost bin? These are the benefits.

For gardening enthusiasts with limited space, making a small compost bin offers a practical solution for recycling organic waste. A small compost bin can easily be placed on a balcony, terrace, or even in a corner of a small garden.

For those looking for a high-quality small compost bin, the HOTBIN is an excellent choice. With its compact size and advanced thermal properties, the HOTBIN offers an efficient and effective solution for producing high-quality compost, even in limited spaces.
